X Shuts Down Operations in Brazil Amid Legal Battle Over Election Disinformation

X, formerly known as Twitter, is calling it quits on its operations in Brazil. But don’t worry—Brazilian users can still enjoy the platform’s offerings, just without any local support. This bold move comes in the middle of a legal skirmish with Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who apparently didn’t appreciate X's resistance to blocking accounts involved in spreading election disinformation.

Faced with the threat of arrest for its Brazilian legal representative, X chose the brave path of… abandoning its local staff. In a statement, the company shifted the responsibility of choosing between democracy and Alexandre de Moraes to the Brazilian people.

Amusingly, X has now made itself the martyr of free speech, protecting its employees by, well, not having any in Brazil anymore. Meanwhile, the legal drama continues, with former President Bolsonaro’s fans screaming for Moraes’ impeachment. Musk, who’s had some interesting political escapades in Brazil, has chimed in too, but that’s a story for another day.
