Meta Learns the Hard Way: You Can't Mess with European Data

Meta decided to hit the pause button on its plan to use European data to train AI, all because those pesky regulators wouldn't stop breathing down its neck. Apparently, the folks at Meta thought it was a brilliant idea to quietly use personal data from Facebook and Instagram users across Europe to train their AI models. But, surprise, surprise, European privacy laws had a different opinion.

In a classic case of "Oh, you didn't see that coming?", Meta now has to offer an opt-out option to users, thanks to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). So, while Meta’s trying to assure everyone that this is all totally legit and above board, it turns out users have to jump through hoops just to stop their data from being used. Talk about making users beg to be excluded.

For now, Meta's grand AI training scheme is on hold, at least until they figure out how to appease the European watchdogs. Meanwhile, users get to enjoy the fun of opting out, assuming they can navigate Meta's labyrinthine privacy settings.
